3-day headache....What to do???

I have no idea what to do anymore when I get a really intense headache/pressure! Mine, this time, started Tuesday morning and even though I tried to tough it out I ended up having to call my husband to pick me up from work by 10am. We went straight home and gave me my normal dose of meds for "bad pain" but it didn't do much. We chose not to go to the ER only because we've been down that road before and it's always the same results! No help, nothing they can do, nothing shows on the scans, and of course they understand our frustration but cannot do anything at this time~!!

So I tried for 2 days to make it through but that first night almost changed my mind because I could not stay asleep because I was up throwing up every two hours and there was nothing that would stop it. I tried phenegren (might have spelled it wrong but its made to stop nausea and throwing up) and it didn't work. So I really thought maybe the hospital was my best bet....but again we remembered the many times we've tried that and stayed home to battle it AGAIN. By the end of the second day...I couldn't rid the pain and my husband just couldn't bare it another minute and we packed up and drove all the way to Miami hospital hoping that this hospital was better and we would receive better help. Well, they were nicer and more sympathetic but couldn't help and all they could do was hook me up to an IV to get fluids in me along with some medicine for pain. They did a scan but again it showed nothing (as most catscans wont) so they sent us home and here we are again. I don't know what to do anymore but I can't keep going on this way! I missed 2 and a half days of work and it's only February. I can't see how I will ever make it through a whole year without missing too much work due to my headaches and pain! I am hoping for a miracle.

been there a thousand times, and your right they dnt have a clue. what about your family doc. or the neurosurgeon,can't they help? is that you on my support group page [me and our chiari@yahoo groups.com? i'm a little confused.. nothing new i'm confused alot......uhh, let's see remodies for head pain try hot shower falling from top of your head down your neck.or bag of frozen veggies sounds crazy but might work. also may have asked already are you tethered? cause that could be causing pain and pressure [i've been thru that as well. let me know if there's anything i can do to help you.... many blessings,kathy

Kathy, I apologize for not getting back with you but it's taken everything I have to get caught up after the 3 days of headaches and now I am suffering problems with my right eye!
which support group page? I am a member of WACMA and CCI (Chiari connection International) I also have a Facebook page where I have a group that I am eventually (time allowing) link in from this site and try to run them side by side. Facebook is a great way to get to know one another on a more personal level~and fun!

This sounds a whole lot like what I've been dealing with for the past 17 yrs. I once took a whole bottle of 600 mill ibuprofen and it knocked me out for a while, but did not touch the headache. The e.r. has a shot they have given me that does work sometimes. I have no idea what it is though. I just tell them I am here for THE shot. I have tried every medicine I think they've ever had on the market with no luck. I just called my doctor last week to request another MRI since my daughter was just diagnosed with the chiari malformation. I wonder what the results will be like. I did get a catscan but of course it showed nothing. My last MRI was 17 yrs ago when I first started getting the headaches and they just told me that yeah they could tell I was having migraines, but no idea why. Hopefully they have learned a thing or two since then!

I know exactly how you feel i get such insainly horrible migraines they last for days its unreal ..I will try medication and when that doesnt work cause it usually doesnt i move on to bags of ice were ever i have pain thats were the ice is. My headaches usually focus on the right side of my head from the neck up to behind my right eye. Ive also done the hospital thing its not worth sitting there for nothing most of the time. I havnt had surgery eventhough ive been told i need to. Im really nervous about doing that especially after reading about your sugery the fact that you feel worse i cant imagine feeling worse than i do now im only 34, 3 kids and now not working due to the pain. my name is stacy johnson i have a facebook i wud love to be able to talk to someone who knows about this condition more i dont really have anybody...

Stacy,

Your not alone, that's for sure! Hang in there..I'm going to find you on FB. Just remember too that not everyone is the same. Some people are very happy with the outcome of their surgery. I am just having problems and since I've not had a ton of other tests...how do I know it's not something else? I do believe mostly that it's Chiari related but I am trying hard to be open-minded!
Take it easy....and keep visiting back as more and more people are coming here and connecting!

have you had an MRI? That is the only scan that will reveal the chiari malformation.
