About Me
I am the mother of a five year old son with a Chiari 1 malformation. Landon has suffered from intense headaches and pain in his arms and legs for a while now. We have also noticed slight balance problems and occasional difficulty swallowing. He is scheduled for decompression surgery at McGovners Children's Hospital/Duke Medical on June 16, 2009. Wendy,
Please know that our experience may be different from what you do go through. Matthew's surgery was around 5hrs. When he got to recovery he looked so pathetic!! For the first 24hrs he really didn't want to eat. He just nibbled on food. Right around the 24hr period he was moved onto the floor from the PICU. Once he got to his room he wanted to get up and walk around. He even tried to talk my Mother into letting him leave the hospital. He complained of his neck hurting and had a hard time moving it side to side. The heat packs at the hospital worked wonders. He would make himself turn his head side to side to build his neck muscle back up. He started eating more and roaming the halls. They kept him in the hospital till day 4 because he would not have a bowel movement. Which I finally convinced them that he wouldn't at the hospital. Plus we had a huge snow storm that week too and were basically stuck. lol After about 2 weeks he returned to school. I have more of this on our website: http://www.freewebs.com/matthewschiari/ You can email me at merideth3b@hotmail.com If you have any questions or just want to talk. Thanks, Merideth |
